Subject: MAIL IS DEAD
I couldn't tell if this went out or not and I didn't want to leave you all
hanging.
The SPAM that has been sent through here has had devastating consequences.
I've had to shut off all incoming mail. This may pe PERMANENT!
I'm trying to catch my breath on this before looking at other options. If
anyone has suggestions, I'm glad to listen. It may well mean moving
everything from here. Even if I can keep regional lists going, I don't
think it will be possible to keep individually owned lists on other IU
machines.
I'm truly sorry. This place in Georgia has run thousands of spammed
messages through here and created enormous problems for us, and that's
what has caused this.
My mail has been coming to one of my Mercury servers and they are both
shut off. I'm getting it rerouted but that won't take effect for at least
a day. After that you will be able to reach me at stephenl@indiana.edu
If I can't find a reasonable solution then your only choice will be to
move your lists to other places. If it comes to this, I will send you your
subscription lists and archived files as fast as I can, but it may take a
little time. For now, as I've said, I'm looking at options.
